Dwayne Johnsons, purchased the XFL before it was set to auction. Dwayne the Rock Johnson partnered with an investment firm bought the XFL for 15 million USD. The investment firm is none other than Gerry Cardinale’s, RED BIRD CAPITAL. It is a private investment firm, that mainly focusses on sports related businesses. Known Oakland Athletics Executive, Billy Beane is also an investor.
In an interview with ESPN, Johnson says. “With pride and gratitude for all that I’ve built with my own two hands. I plan to apply these callouses to the XFL and look forward to creating something specials for the players, fans, and everyone involved for the love of football,”
Dwayne the Rock Johnson, is a professional actor and a former WWE wrestler. He played college football at the University of Miami. After that he played professional football in the Canadian Football League, for a short while.
The XFL before its bankruptcy, signed a major broadcast deal with ESPN and the FOX. But due to the corona virus COVID-19 pandemic, XFL was forced to discontinue its remaining 2020 season. Soon after the cancellation, on April 11, the XFL filed for bankruptcy after laying off most of its employees.
XFL, Dwayne the rock Johnson and “Ballers” jokes
As the fans came to know, the rock has cooked up a deal with his former boss. The deal was, to buy XFL that went bankrupt from WWE’s Vince McMahon. The social media was flooded with Ballers jokes and memes.
The league showed a lot of potential in the first year. If Johnson and Red Bird Capital can make something more out of it, this will be a great deal. It sounds similar to the HBO’s show Ballers. In which Dwayne Johnson was starring, and he played the role of a former NFL player. The former player is now the financial manager of a team and similar thoughts are seen on twitter.
Let us have a look at some of the Ballers related tweets.
“XFL” a good investment for Dwayne Johnson?
It is exciting to see Dwayne the Rock Johnson and a group of investors, saving the bankrupt XFL. The league exhibited some potential and fun with its tweaked rules and mid game interviews. But the fans are also curious. Why would someone like Dwayne Johnson, sink millions of dollars in a sports league. Which is already filing for bankruptcy. Also while the whole world is in the middle of a pandemic. Specially, when the US considered as one of the hotspot, for rising COVID-19 cases.
Will the XFL be played in the Bubble? The Bubble model has worked great for different Soccer leagues in the Europe. If in the next season, we are still facing the pandemic. XFL can use the Bubble model and this can revive the league. The NFL is so huge that the Bubble model cannot be applied here. It seems like a logistical nightmare. But on the other hand, XFL has only eight teams, four teams per division. There were 10 weeks play offs planned for the XFL before the shutdown. It looks like the XFL will be played in the Bubble if the world is still facing the COVID-19 pandemic. This can revive the league.
According to ESPN’s Kevin Seifert. The XFL declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy April 13 and has been seeking a buyer for the past three months. Marketing itself as a made-for-TV product. That could transition as early as 2021 to a bubble concept during the coronavirus pandemic.
Is the Decision good?
The NFL is in a trouble this Fall. It is highly unlikely to continue. On the other hand XFL seems ready for the next year and it could worth a lot more than what Dwayne The Rock Johnson put in.
