What is Instagram Reels?

IG Reels is a brand new way to create fun and engaging content using Instagram Stories. Similar to TikTok, Instagram users can make and edit 15-second videos sync with music and share them, explore the new Reels tab on a user’s profile.

Instead of only seeing Reels from accounts you follow, you will see Reels from most popular and trending accounts on Instagram.

While the Reels algorithm is still unfigured, it looks similar to the TikTok For You page. It’s influenced by who you follow, what content you interact with, and your location.

According to Instagram, “If your reel is featured in Explore, you’ll receive a notification. Featured reels are a selection of public reels chosen by Instagram to help you discover original content we hope will entertain and inspire you.”

Users can also insert music from a default library or use their own audio. Other than selecting music, there are many video editing tools to explore. A video countdown timer, adjust your video’s speed, and a number of video effects to choose from.

How to create an IG Reels

If you are familiar with Instagram before to make videos for your Story, the interface is pretty similar. Except Reels gives you a few more options. When you open your Instagram camera, you’ll see three options at the bottom of the screen. Live, Story, and Reels. Tap on Reels to start.

You can tap and hold on the camera button to record a video clip. When you let go of the button, it will stop recording. As you record, you’ll see the progress bar at the top of the page, which shows how long is left before the clip is full. As long as you have time, you can add more clips to your Reels.

On the left-hand side of the screen in the Reels camera, you’ll see a number of different editing options. You can add music, add effects, speed up or slow down a clip, and more.

Once you’re satisfied with your Reels video clips, you can tap the arrow to view it or do more editing. Now edit the Reels, like an Instagram Story post, by adding text, stickers, and more.

Once you’re done, you can tap the arrow again to post your Reels video. You may add a caption, choose a cover shot, add your Reels to your feed, and your story. Plus you can also quit making the Reels video part and move to the Explore tab if you want. You can even save it as a draft for later, if you don’t want to share it now.

Even in its initial launch stage, IG Reels is providing a space where both brands and creators can generate leads.

Paris-based photographer Janelle Sweeney of My Paris Portraits is using the feature for a few weeks now and says that she’s started to see her engagement rise.
